Brakes granted environmental award

Leading environmental waste management company, ACM Environmental PLC, has announced that Brakes, one of the UK’s best-known food suppliers, has been awarded a Greener Path Award for Landfill Diversion for consistently achieving zero per cent to landfill across multiple sites in the UK since July 2016.

Producing circa 14,200 tonnes of waste per year across more than 60 sites, this significant environmental success has been achieved by working in partnership with ACM Environmental Plc to devise innovative and environmentally-focused initiatives.

Travis Way, ACM Environmental Plc Group Finance & Operations Director said “We are delighted to present Brakes with this Award as they have been committed to reducing their environmental impact.

'With multiple and varying sites across the UK this was going to be a substantial undertaking so we are pleased to have achieved such consistent and impressive results with them. We are currently servicing all their sites, providing a fully-managed, single source waste and recycling solution.

'Not only have we helped Brakes on the road to zero % to landfill, we have worked hard to ensure the most sustainable end point disposal methods are being utilised and we have seen more than 45% now being recycled.”

Steve Webster, Indirect Goods & Services Manager at Brakes, said, “We have been working in partnership with ACM Environmental for a number of years and together have managed to reach our optimum environmental performance.

'ACM have a unique business model supported by a nationally-integrated network of recycling and reprocessing facilities. This enables Brakes to minimise the amount of waste we produce, optimise our recycling levels, eliminate the use of landfill, and reduce our impact on the environment with significantly reduced costs.

'ACM’s state of the art Environmental Services Portal (ESP) is invaluable in helping us manage compliance and end point disposal as well as monitoring our environmental statistics and carbon calculator across all our sites”.
