Urban Tea Rooms to open flagship site in £400m St James’s Market

Urban Tea Rooms is set to open a new flagship site in the £400m landmark destination, St James’s Market in London's SW1, developed by The Crown Estate and Oxford Properties.

It will bring its modern take on the traditional English tea room with smart all-day cafe dining, having firmly established itself as a favourite among local offices and shoppers in the West End.

London coffee ‘Allpress’ and loose-leaf teas will be served to take-away or eat in, alongside the best in organic, British produce; including freshly-made salads, soups, sandwiches, handmade cakes and artisanal baking.

Urban Tea Rooms is the latest operator to join St James’s Market, which will have seven new restaurants in total. These include the internationally acclaimed Nordic restaurant, Aquavit; a new Danish bakery from Ole and Steen; and the recently opened Japanese Anzu and Salt Yard Group’s Veneta.

Anthea Harries, on behalf of the St James’s Market Partnership, said, “We’re thrilled to welcome Urban Tea Rooms to St James’s Market. Their blend of high quality teas and coffee with the best in British and organic produce will perfectly complement the mix of bespoke eateries at St James’s Market, with something for everyone and all occasions in this new culinary destination.”

Sophie Hudson, co-founder and director of Urban Tea Rooms, added, “We are so excited and honoured to be opening Urban Tea Rooms St James’s in this fantastic site. Our friendly staff and tasty food will create a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and we hope to become a firm favourite for office locals, busy shoppers and London visitors, just like in Kingly Street. We have some really exciting new menu ideas for this new site, and a beautiful shop design - we can’t wait to open.”

This scheme builds upon The Crown Estate’s wider £500m investment strategy for its St James’s portfolio, which includes re-establishing this historic district as a destination for the best in international cuisine, such as Milos, Chutney Mary, Chiccetti and Café Murano.
