Best UK fish & chip shop could win Michelin star

Award-winning Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Plympton, Plymouth could soon become the first takeaway in the world to be awarded a Michelin star, making it the first takeaway to do so.

The outlet was crowned the best UK fish and chip shop at the 2017 National Fish & Chip Awards last month, which brought the site to the attention of Michelin.

Michelin stated, 'We are aware of this establishment and our inspectors are taking it into consideration when they visit Plymouth.'

Opened in 2014 and owned by Nikki Mutton and Craig Maw, the shop serves up thirteen different kinds of fish, ranging from traditional cod and haddock to local Cornish hake, sardine fish cakes and lobster.

The shop scooped the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year after the owners had entered it three times. The highest they had achieved was coming second last year.

Nikki Mutton and Craig Maw said when they won the award, “We’ve only owned the shop for four years and have already achieved some amazing things; we have the world’s most sustainable seafood menu, are one of only two fish and chip businesses in the UK to have a 3 star rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association, along with over 25 industry and non-industry awards, but I have to admit that winning this award is the pinnacle of our careers.

“We’ve worked hard to take sustainability to the next level and this is at the core of our business. We’re proud to offer over 12 Marine Stewardship Council certified fish species, but we’ve not stopped there; we even use QR codes to let customers trace the journey of their fish, from sea to place.

“It feels like everything we’ve worked for has come to fruition now. We’re more than ready to take the crown, and look forward to championing our industry and the nation’s favourite takeaway.”
