Acclaimed Danish bakery chain changes hands & plans four London sites

Denmark-based Lagkagehuset, which operates the Ole & Steen brand, is planning to expand its cafe-bakery chain to four sites across London by the end of the year, having been acquired by Nordic Capital in a multi-million pound deal.

The company has launched two London stores in the UK, which are situated in Richmond and Haymarket (pictured). Two new venues are set to open soon in Canary Wharf and Victoria.

Upmarket brand Ole & Steen of Denmark serves up high-quality artisanal breads, cakes and pastries, as well as teas and coffee. Its menu includes favourites such as cinnamon snegl (Danish for snail due to its pastry swirls), and flodebolle – marshmallow puffs covered in dark chocolate and rolled in hazelnuts.

Ole Kristoffersen and Steen SkallebÆk formed the bakery chain back in 2008. It now stretches to 67 bakeries across Denmark.
