School chef cooks in Rogan & Co restaurant as part of LACA programme

A Longridge school cook helped to prepare meals for the lunchtime diners at Rogan & Co restaurant, in Cartmel, Cumbria, last week.

Rogan & Co is owned by internationally renowned chef Simon Rogan (pictured), together with his two Michelin star L'Enclume restaurant nearby.

Dawn Davis, the cook supervisor at Barnacre Road Primary School, cooked alongside haute cuisine chef Gerald van der Walt, at the fine-dining restaurant on Friday 17 November.

This opportunity formed part of this year's Lead Association for Catering in Education (LACA) National School Meals Week 'Host a School Chef' programme, which ran from Monday 13 to Friday 17 November.

Now in its fourth year, the scheme offers school cooks the chance to spend a day working with some of the most talented chefs in the catering industry, in some of the most famous restaurants in the country.

National School Meals Week celebrates the importance of school meals, and the importance of children being provided with a hot and nutritious lunch.

County Councillor Susie Charles, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Schools, said, 'What a fantastic experience this must have been for Dawn. She has had a great chance to improve her own skills, and she will now be able to share the knowledge she has gained with her colleagues at school.

'It must have been exciting to work in the kitchen of a leading restaurant, with a top chef. I'm sure that she thoroughly enjoyed the day.'

Cook Dawn Davis said, 'I really enjoyed this experience. I helped a leading chef at Rogan & Co, and learned a lot from him. I also visited L'Enclume, which I had only read about before. I'll now be able to pass on what I have learned to my colleagues to help them.'

Chef patron Simon Rogan, said, 'We were delighted to host a school chef at Rogan & Co for National School Meals Week. I certainly appreciate just how important healthy meals in schools are to a child's wellbeing and we were very proud to have been involved in this worthwhile event.'

As well as visiting L'Enclume, which has two Michelin stars and five AA Rosettes, Dawn also had a tour of Our Farm, which supplies the majority of fresh ingredients for Rogan's restaurants.
