Motcombs to launch downstairs supper club


On 21 February, Belgravia stalwart Motcombs will unveil Motcombs Supper Club, set downstairs underneath the locally loved brasserie.

Owners Ross Anderson and wife Jax will incorporate their illustrious background in the arts as they breathe new life into the establishment with an exclusive menu designed especially for the supper club, cocktail artistry and live music.

Whilst retaining the old school charm of the original Motcombs, the Anderson's are bringing their own eclectic personalities to the mix for this underground supper club only open Thursdays to Saturdays to those in the know. With Ross’ and Jax’s backgrounds in theatre, film and music, their hope is that Motcombs Supper Club will be reminiscent of the old Belgravia, famed for its glamourous past with music, dancing and bright young things.

Jax, a talented classical violinist who premiered as a soloist at the Philharmonic at just age nine, brings notes of her own musical pedigree to the venue with live Jazz Thursdays and hand-picked DJs until the early hours on weekends.

Guests will descend from Motcomb Street via a wood-panelled stairway, where they must ring the bell of an unassuming doorway to enter the subterranean dining room. Having frequented Jax’s childhood home in South Africa, the pair have drawn inspiration from the landscapes of the game reserve for the interiors at Motcombs Supper Club. On the walls, safari meets Belgravia as jungle-printed wallpaper combines with Motcomb’s eclectic art collection.

The Anderson's, together with Head Chef Laurent Baratki, have devised a menu of regularly changing dishes exclusive to the supperclub such as Marbled duck liver terrine with sauternes jelly and brioche, Tornedos Rossini, and Miso-blackened cod and Crêpes Suzette. Behind the wicker bar, an informed cocktail list will be made up of 1920s classic tipples from a properly made Old Fashioned, to Espresso Martinis and Negronis.

Ross Anderson said, ‘We wanted to capture the essence of Belgravia, its opulence and colourful history and distil it into a modern era Motcombs Supper Club, whilst staying true to the restaurant’s unique character and charm.

'It will be a place where all of life’s pleasures - jazz, great food, a cocktail or two - can be enjoyed. It’s been something of a passion project and encompasses our personalities as much as Motcombs’ prestigious and illustrious history - we can’t wait to welcome our friends, both old and new.’

The Anderson's took over Motcombs in 2017 from previous owner Philip Lawless, who successfully turned Motcombs into a London institution. Motcombs was founded in 1982.
