Lucky Onion founders to open refurbed North Yorks inn

Sam and Georgie Pearman, previously owners and founders of boutique Cotswold hotel & restaurant group The Lucky Onion, have confirmed that their new project The Talbot, in Malton, North Yorkshire, will reopen on 4 February, following a one-month closure and refurbishment.

Georgie, who designed all the Lucky Onion hotels and restaurants, has led the revamp of the riverside coaching inn.

A south-facing dining room, which will seat 60, offers views across the River Derwent. Newly appointed Head Chef, Robert Brittain, has worked with Sam Pearman to create a series of menus that champion the exceptional produce of Malton and Yorkshire’s wealth of suppliers.

A new bar menu will include snacks and sandwiches to compliment the range of local beers, while the A La Carte’s signature dishes will include Double Bone-in Rib of Yorkshire Shorthorn Beef, Hand Cut Chips, Bone Marrow, Spinach & Yorkshire Gravy designed for two to share; Twice Baked Dale End Cheddar Souffle, Spinach & Grain Mustard, and Mrs Appleby’s Potato Sea Bake-Smoked Haddock & Cod with Tomatoes, Mushrooms & Parsley.

A section dedicated to seafood celebrates the daily catch from the nearby fishing town of Whitby, including crab, cockles and Whitby’s famous Fortune’s hot smoked salmon. On the drinks front, a new cocktail menu will feature a range of classics as well as some original additions which have been designed with the English countryside in mind, including the Rhubarb & Ginger Bramble, and the Marmalade Mule.

Adjacent to the dining room, a striking Feasting Room, seating 24, will be available for private dining events and shoot dinners, while a riverside marquee in the walled garden, holding up to 200 guests, will be available for larger parties and weddings.

The redesign of the 26 bedrooms and suites, to be completed by late-spring 2019, will draw on the building’s history and local heritage to create rooms with relaxed, homely touches. Marble bathrooms will feature 100 Acres products – Sam and Georgie’s own completely natural botanicals range; whilst many of the rooms, including two large suites, will boast four-poster beds and large sash windows overlooking the riverside grounds.

The Talbot sits in the heart of Malton, just off the central market square. Only 20 minutes from the historic city of York, the town is set within the idyllic North Yorkshire countryside on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and within driving distance to the seaside fishing town of Whitby.

Both huge fans of Malton and the artisan food scene, Georgie and Sam are working closely with Tom Naylor-Leyland, whose family have owned The Talbot for many years, and who has been working over the past 10 years to build Malton into one of the UK’s top foodie destinations, creating a monthly food market and the annual Malton Food Festival which, now in its 11th year, attracts 30,000 people to the town.
