A girl who saved her sister’s life by donating her bone marrow now has her name on the front of a lorry in recognition of her selfless act.
Kelcey Firth, aged12, from Darwen, near Blackburn, spent almost eight weeks in hospital undergoing chemotherapy and receiving numerous different medications to make her strong enough to receive an effective bone marrow transplant.
In May of this year, sister Ellie, who is 10, donated her bone marrow and in doing so saved her sister’s life.
Now both girls have had Nisa delivery lorries named after them to commemorate their courage.
Their father, Daniel Firth, said, “Before receiving the bone marrow transplant, Kelcey would spend copious amounts of time in hospital due to a chest problem she has. She spent a lot of time away from her family and friends.
“Having the girls’ names on the front of the lorries is amazing. It really demonstrates both Ellie and Kelcey’s courage and determination through such a difficult time.”
Their mother, Tina Firth added, “Ellie is such a wonderful, kind and strong little girl who saved her sister’s life and Kelcey has been so brave, not only when she received treatment for the bone marrow transplant but also for all her previous illnesses.”
Cath Stokes, manager at the Nisa Local where the twin lorry unveiling took place, said she was delighted to be involved. She said, “The girls thoroughly enjoyed it and from our perspective it was so nice to be involved, especially when you hear the girls’ story and what they have had to go through. It was a lovely tribute to them both.
“Lots of our customers have asked what it was all about and they are all now looking out for the lorries when they are making deliveries to the shop.”
Kelcey and Ellie Firth are the latest Nisa shoppers to see their names across the front of our lorries as part of our celebrations for Nisa’s 40th birthday.
