The Yan set to open in July

The Yan at Broadrayne, a contemporary bistro with beds is due to open on Monday 1 July in the The Lake District. A stone’s throw from the idyllic village of Grasmere, the 17th Century former farm has seven plush en-suite bedrooms, a rustic bistro and open-plan lounge area.

Family-run, The Yan epitomises Cumbrian hospitality, offering guests a wholesome welcome, hearty food and stylish interiors, placing the new bistro with beds as the perfect base for those who want to explore The Lakes.

Nestled amongst the Central Fells, and named after the Cumbrian word for the number ‘one’, the centre-piece to The Yan is an open-plan bistro and lounge area. The area combines elements of old and new to create a contrasting yet welcoming environment.

Floor to ceiling windows and skylights fill the communal areas with natural light, allowing guests to look out onto the breathtaking natural landscape, while exposed steel girders and ceilings, wood clad panelling and slate features create an industrial feel.

The Yan will have a stunning outdoor area which will see a three tier outdoor terrace with panoramic views of the famous Lake District fells. The terrace will be the perfect sun-trap for guests to enjoy an early breakfast or evening drinks.

Each of the seven plush ensuite bedrooms have their own individual characteristics, reflecting the unique surrounding landscape and the original quirks of the historic building. Varying in size, the en-suite bedrooms range from cosy doubles to spacious suites that sleep up to four, catering to the needs of individuals, couples and groups. Two of the bedrooms are also pet-friendly, allowing guests to bring their furry friends away with them to explore the area.

The bistro is open to both overnight guests of The Yan and the public, serving seasonal, hearty dishes inspired by the farm’s rich history. A casual yet classy eatery, the menu uses locally sourced and sustainable ingredients as the focal point, creating rustic Cumbrian classics and nostalgic British favourites.

Some dishes will feature produce that comes from just beyond the doorstep of the bistro with beds; the menu at The Yan will incorporate ingredients from Broadrayne Farm (the farm where The Yan sits) such as eggs and Broadrayne lamb, making the menu truly fresh and unique.

Each dish incorporates contemporary twists, with sharing plates used to add to the social feel of the bistro, creating a wholesome menu and ambience. The Bistro will serve breakfast until 11am, a selection of cakes and coffee will be available in the afternoon and the kitchen will then open again at 3pm until 9pm.

The Yan is the latest addition to the Broadrayne Farm site, which is already home to Grasmere Glamping and Broadrayne Farm Holiday Cottages. Previously an independent hostel, the The Yan has seen an investment of over half a million pounds from David and Sally Keighley, who bought Broadrayne Farm in 2012. Moving to the area from Yorkshire, the pair have worked to successfully grow the Broadrayne Farm business, upgrading and expanding the site’s offering, whilst improving guest service.

The Yan is being run by the couple’s daughter, Jess Manley and her husband Will, with Jess as Operations Director and Will as Executive Chef. Both Jess and Will have comprehensive international hospitality experience, with positions across Australia, Asia and Europe. Most recently, the pair worked together in the French Alps, where they managed Auberge & Chalets Sur La Montagne- a privately-owned chalet company with 27 luxury chalets and a 22-bedroom boutique hotel.

Will was the Executive Chef for the company and Jess the Area Manager and they worked to successfully turn the company from a seasonal business to a year-round holiday destination due to their high standards of service and exceptional offerings.

Since moving to The Lakes, Will has worked as a sous chef at the well-known Homeground Café in Windermere and at Michelin-starred restaurant, Forest Side whilst Jess has been working hard on both the design and details of The Yan from stylish features to special guest comforts, along with the day to day running of the existing glamping and cottage businesses.

Jess Manley stated, “We are so excited that The Yan is opening next week. It has definitely been a labour of love but the whole team is looking forward to welcoming guests to our beautiful spot and showcasing the best of what The Lakes has to offer! We can’t wait to have the place full of guests relaxing and settling down for a meal at the bistro whilst taking in the stunning views.”
