New data from the NPD Group has revealed that almost half (48%) of coffee consumed is provided by contract caterers, with high street coffee shops having a much smaller role at 14%.
However, Dominic Allport, NPD's Insights Director, said that coffee from contract caterers might not always match up to the quality of what is offered in QSR sector coffee shops, suggesting that there is still room for improvement.
NPD's report shows that hot drinks are included in 25% of UK out-of-home (OOH) visits, with coffee continuing to dominate, making up 70% of these visits, while tea capturing a more modest 26%.
In the year until July 2019, coffee servings were up by 1.5% in that period to 488m.
From the total spend of £57bn in the total out-of-home food and drink market, just under £1bn is hot drinks, with coffee representing 68% of sales.
