New Festival Square revealed in £500m Birmingham scheme

Birmingham City Council has unveiled proposals for the £500m redevelopment of the 14-hectare Wholesale Markets site, including a public square, hotels and museums.

The plans feature Festival Square which will look out to a new museum, culture centres, markets, hotels and leisure opportunities, like ice rinks or family attractions.

Also, the scheme offers two giant market buildings housing the indoor, retail and rag markets, trading by day then turning into a destination food hub by night.

Finally, there would be major transport changes with pedestrian-friendly boulevards, and a new city centre park.

Marketing Birmingham, which is funded by the public and private sectors, said the 10-year plan over 14 hectares would bring 3,000 jobs.
