Aldi ramps up Xmas store openings with 8 in one day

Discount supermarket chain Aldi, which is headed up by CEO Giles Hurley (pictured), has opened eight new stores on the same day as it ramps up its store opening programme before the year end.

The eight new stores are located in Bodmin, Chellaston, Eckington, Glasgow, Islington, Longridge, Oldham and Skelton. Aldi's Islington store on London's Holloway Road has opened at the site of a former Poundland store. At 570 sq m, it is now the smallest store in the discounter's UK estate; 10 sq m smaller that Aldi Tooting, also located in London.

For last month and this month, there will be a total of 24 new store launches. Other store plans include three refurbishments to Aldi's Project Fresh format which can be seen here in our latest store visit report.

By the end of 2018, Aldi will have increased its store estate by 70 stores to a total of 833. Over the next two years, Aldi plans to continue its strong store opening pipeline with 130 new stores, and continues to be on track to reach its latest target of 1,200 stores by 2025.

The new store openings will allow Aldi to reach more shoppers during this key trading period and in turn boost sales before the end of the retailer's financial year (31 December 2018).

Additional sales space, more refurbished stores, an improved and bigger range, as well as a strong advertising campaign all indicate that this Christmas will be another success for the discounter.
