Greggs launches vegan sausage roll today

The UK's largest bakery chain, Greggs is launching a vegan sausage roll today, just as record numbers of consumers sign up for Veganuary. On Sunday alone, 14,000 people pledged to go meat-free for first month of new year.

The new launch follows a petition by animal welfare organisation, PETA in 2018 calling for a vegan version of the sausage roll, which was signed by over 20,000 people.

The company, which sells 1.5m traditional pork sausage rolls a week, says the new version has been designed to mirror some of the original's classic features.

Available alongside the regular roll, Greggs' bestselling product, the new offering replaces the sausage filling with Quorn, and is wrapped in 96 layers of puff pastry.

The roll is today available in 950 selected stores across the country, costing £1.00.

There are now over 3.5 million vegans in the UK, so demand for more vegan options is continuing to grow.
