Roberts Bakery invests £1m in national expansion

Roberts Bakery has invested over £1million of new funds into its production of sandwich thins – square thin rolls – and premium speciality breads at its site in Manners Industrial Estate, Ilkeston.

It already supplies products to cafés, restaurants, wholesalers and supermarkets, such as Aldi and Brakes, but hopes the major investment programme – the second within 12 months – will enable it to sell nationwide

Site operations manager Chris Bulloch said: 'We're improving our quality and expanding our potential product range.

'It gives us a lot of opportunity for developing new products, and also increasing our throughput and capacity for future orders.

'The total investment is a real game-changer for us in terms of where we can go in the market and who we can deal with.

'We're very regionally based at the moment but want to take ourselves to a national level, and we're discussing with a range of supermarkets about getting our range into their shops.

'While some businesses may be shying away from investing in potential, we wanted to show our MP how a local company is really trying to cement its position and growing.'

Roberts Bakery is a fourth generation, family-owned company that was founded in 1887 as a modest grocery store, which sold freshly-baked bread to customers in Northwich, Cheshire, where it is still headquartered.
