Morito launches new basement tapas bar with live music nights

Five years after launching on Hackney Road, East London favourite, Morito, is opening a new bar - Downstairs at Morito - on the floor beneath their acclaimed east London neighbourhood restaurant.

From Morito chef proprietors Sam & Sam Clark, Downstairs at Morito brings together their love of food and live music, supporting local talent with ticketed Morito Music nights running every Tuesday from 14 September.

The warm and welcoming bar will be open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, serving the well-loved Southern Spanish, Eastern Mediterranean and North African dishes as in the restaurant but with a casual late-night bar atmosphere and a focus on cocktails.

Downstairs at Morito has been beautifully designed by collaborators Studiomania as an atmospheric late-night addition to the restaurant, where classic Morito dishes, communal dining and good quality cocktails come hand-in-hand.

The stylish, dimly lit space features royal blue banquet seating against Morito’s signature blue and orange walls. Seating is centred around a distinctive bar lit from behind to be reminiscent of a summer sunset in the Mediterranean, set alongside a warm copper bar top and bright accents of Seville orange detail in the custom-made bar stools and banisters.

Launching on 14 September, Morito Music will showcase the wealth of talent and music diversity in East London each Tuesday at Downstairs at Morito, set amongst a relaxed and laid back bar atmosphere with a generous menu of Morito’s favourite tapas and sharing dishes to enjoy throughout the evening.

Curated by local musician Crispin Forster, Morito Music nights will present distinctive experiences each week, with live music carefully considered to match the drinks, dishes and energy of Morito. The fully immersive dining experience will see the musicians play in the middle of the room while diners watch from surrounding restaurant seating.

Performances will range from a night of emerging East London talent, to a collaborative acoustic feast from guitarist Raphael White, cellist Ruby Moore and Morito Music curator Crispin. The final night in September will see multi-instrumentalist producer and composer of Middle Eastern rhythms, Seb Marx, joined by singer-songwriter Annabelle Boissonnet who draws inspiration from Arabic, Mediterranean and North African influences.

Tickets for Morito Music are bookable in advance, priced at £30pp and include a generous menu of Morito’s favourite sharing plates and tapas dishes, for a leisurely evening of live music, great food, wine and cocktails.

The menu will kick off with labneh and flatbreads, Spanish tortilla and alioli, chopped salad with crispy chickpeas and zataar, wild seabass wrapped in vine leaf with pilaf and cacik, and Morito’s addictive lamb chops with anchovy butter, finishing off with their classic chocolate and olive oil mousse.

Crispin Forster commented, “I have long dreamed of creating a free-flowing improvisation based on real emotional communication between the performers. These experiences come by chance in a musician’s life, often unexpected, in hotel rooms after a gig or during a sound check on stage somewhere.

'They are precious moments, where the various egos and eccentricities of the musicians are lost in a shared vision of sound.

'The Morito Music nights will attempt to access this same creative energy to serve up a sonic experience that is truly fresh and unique.'
