West Lothian brewery, Alechemy Brewing is getting a national listing with Waitrose
The company is launching its speciality stout - Bring out the Imp – in around 70 branches of the supermarket across the UK, from 1 May 2017. Waitrose is the only major supermarket to sell the stout.
Dr James Davies founded the brewery just five years ago. He began home-brewing in his late teens before earning a PhD in Microbiology. He left a promising career in pharmaceuticals to follow his dream of setting up his own brewery.
Alechemy offer a range of speciality beers alongside a core range of other beers of all styles; they’ve brewed around 80 different beers since starting out in 2012.
In keeping with its own definition of Alechemy as 'the science of great-tasting beer', the brewery experiments continually with new flavours and techniques and uses a wide variety of different hops, malts and imaginative ingredients to create seasonal and occasional ales that are specifically brewed to tempt the palate.
Bring out the Imp is a strong (ABV 10.5%) imperial stout, brewed with molasses, liquorish and oatmeal and fermented with a Belgian yeast.

James Davies said the company aims to provide a high-quality and memorably alternative to the proliferation of mass produced and marketed beers. He said, “We’re very proud to be supplying Waitrose because they are a company that share our values and they’re as passionate about taste and provenance as we are ourselves. We hope this listing will lead to more awareness, interest and demand in future for our unique, flavoursome beers.”
