UKHospitality has welcomed the Government’s statement on the impact of business rates on businesses but urged it to act swiftly.
The Government has today published its response to the Treasury Committee inquiry into the impact of business rates on business.
The response confirms the Government’s commitment to a fundamental reform of the rates system and acknowledges failings in the appeals mechanism.
UKHospitality Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said: “There are some positive to be drawn from the Government’s response. Above all, it shows that the Government understands the need for a system that works for businesses.
“It is good to see that there is a commitment to fundamental reform of the rates system. The Government now needs to push ahead and fulfil its promise without delay. It has indicated that it will listen to suggestions for reform, so we will be liaising with them to make sure the future system works for hospitality.
“In particular, it is good to see a recognition that the appeals system, as it currently stands, is taking far too long. Businesses are being left in limbo as they try to navigate the process and it needs streamlining urgently.
“This is a good first step in addressing some of the problems of the business tax system. We will be liaising with the Government to make sure that reform benefits the hospitality sector that has been disproportionately hit over the years.”
