Wessex Retail snaps up busy Penzance c-store

Boscaswell Stores in the village of Pendeen in Penzance, Cornwall has been bought by Wessex Retail Ltd, which is backed by the SPAR wholesale group.

Boscaswell Stores is a well-established, fully managed convenience store which boasts an impressive turnover. This double fronted shop with Costcutter branded fascia offers a good range of produce popular with the local community, and serves the numerous campsites, self-catering apartments, and holiday cottages in the immediate area.

The store is located within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in the centre of the tourist village of Pendeen, Cornwall. Pendeen is circa seven miles west of Penzance and 10 miles south-east of St Ives.

This stunning location is only a stone’s throw away from the film set of the BBC period drama, Poldark, which brings constant tourists to the village.

The shop sits directly on the coastal road linking St Ives to Land’s End, and holds a unique position of being the first stop and shop from St Ives, benefiting greatly from the footfall brought about by a daily open-top bus which stops opposite the store.

The business was previously owned by Oliver and Julie Hutchinson who have kept it regularly updated and well maintained throughout to ensure the highest level of quality, and took the store through an extensive refit program a few years ago. The couple decided to sell the business so that they could concentrate on their other business interests.

Dave Morris, Director of Retail at Christie & Co, who handled the sale, said, “Despite the challenging times that we have experienced in the UK over the last four months, the retail sector remains buoyant due to the support that local convenience stores give to their communities.

'I would like to wish Julie and Oliver all the best for their future and look forward to any changes that Wessex make to the store.”
