Tesco unveils its new low-carbon concept superstore in Harrogate

Tesco will officially open its new low-carbon concept superstore in Harrogate today (9 December), a development that will bring 120 new jobs to the North Yorkshire community.

The new store showcases a suite of sustainability-driven design features, such as a low-carbon timber frame structure, solar panels that produce electricity on site, locally reclaimed stone, and advanced energy-efficient heating and lighting technologies.

The site represents a model for future store construction as it aims to lower the environmental footprint of its wider estate.

In addition to offering a full food range, the Harrogate store will also incorporate Tesco’s community initiatives.

Ahead of the store’s opening, a £1,000 grant has been awarded to Resurrected Bites, a local food-waste charity operating community cafés across the area.

The new store will also include a permanent Trussell Trust donation point and support Tesco’s flagship programmes, Stronger Starts and Community Food Connection.

Through the in-store blue token vote, Stronger Starts awards quarterly grants ranging from £500 to £1,500 to charities and community groups that assist children, young people and families.

Since 2015, the Community Food Connection scheme, run with FareShare, has provided over 300 million meals to UK charities, with monthly donations exceeding one million.

According to Tesco, the store will place a strong focus on its value proposition by uniting Aldi Price Match, Low Everyday Prices and Clubcard Prices across core ranges.

Store Manager Annabelle Speed said the team was “extremely excited” for the opening.

“We want to offer great value to our customers and the benefits of Tesco Clubcard and Clubcard Prices,” she said.

“We’re so pleased to have got to this point and want to thank everyone for their patience. We look forward to having a positive impact in Harrogate and serving our customers.”

The new Tesco Superstore is in Skipton Road, Harrogate.
