More jobs set to go at troubled Asda

Supermarket chain, Asda is considering axing more than 1,000 store jobs under plans to dispense with hundreds of staff canteens and shopfloor services.

The canteens operate in 350 of its 620 stores and ending the morning perk of free tea and toast that is handed out to staff in a further 230 outlets.

The supermarket said if it went ahead with closing staff canteens it would make fridges and microwaves available for store staff to prepare their own food in, as well as providing hot drink vending machines.

An Asda spokesperson commented, “To deliver the low prices, quality and good value which customers tell us they want it is necessary to look at the way we operate our business and we are reviewing the viability of providing canteens in our stores. This is not a final decision, we are currently in consultation with our colleagues.”

The news comes on top of Asda's plans to shed about 200 workers go at its head office in Leeds.
