Thwaites hotel scoops gold tourism award

Aztec Hotel & Spa is celebrating after winning gold in the tourism awards for Bristol, Bath and Somerset.

The Bristol hotel, which comes under the Shire Hotels umbrella of Thwaites, won the category Hotel of the Year at a glittering award ceremony this week.

With hundreds of businesses entering the awards, Aztec beat off tough competition to reach the final.

The award came just weeks after staff at the hotel celebrated Thwaites winning AA Hotel Group of the Year.

General Manager, Gareth Ireland, said: 'It's been a great year for us and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved. To win this award on the back of winning our AA award has just been incredible and it's all thanks to our fantastic teams at Aztec Hotel & Spa.

'Our ethos of 'Small details, big difference' is brought to life every day by everyone who works at the hotel. They have a great sense of pride in what they do and that does get noticed by our guests.'

To reach the final entrants went through a rigorous three-stage judging process, taking into account websites, reviews, social media, visits by industry 'mystery visitors' and finally a judging panel.

John Hirst, Chief Executive of Destination Bristol said: 'We have been really pleased by the level of interest in the awards and I would like to congratulate all the winners. I am encouraged to re-focus on this again in the New Year and look for more ways to reward and acknowledge excellence within our industry. Thank you to everyone in making this event a huge success.'

Successful businesses in the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Awards will now be fast tracked into the South West Tourism Excellence Awards in February 2017 with eligible finalists also considered for the national Visit England Awards later in 2017.

There is more good news to come for Aztec Hotel & Spa, with substantial investment set to get underway to further improve the facilities.

There has already been investment in guest bedrooms, next week the restaurant is to be refurbished and that will be followed up with improvements to the spa in November and the function suite in January.

Gareth Ireland added, 'It's important to us to continue to improve and invest in the hotel. We are very proud to be the best hotel in the area and we want to keep it that way.'
