German Gymnasium & Wines of Germany launch Berlin picnic hampers

This summer, German Gymnasium will be channeling Berlin cool with a range of contemporary picnic hampers created in partnership with Wines of Germany. Londoners can make like a Berliner and enjoy the hampers in the best urban outdoor locations, from nearby Granary Square to Regent’s Park, or indulge on the Grade II-listed restaurant’s own terrace, from 5 June until 10 September.

Adding to the urban vibes, each picnic will be served in a modern steel hamper complete with wayfarer-style sunglasses for two. With three varieties to choose from, each has been designed to highlight a different German wine, available to order by the bottle or the glass.

Germany’s answer to Champagne and Prosecco, and one of their best kept secrets, Sekt is an elegant, crisp and refreshing sparkling wine that is enjoyed in some of the best bars and restaurants in Berlin. The Schloss Vaux ‘Cuvée Vaux’ Brut (2014) is ideal for a celebration or relaxed afternoon in the sun.

For those who like aromatic still wines, Riesling is the perfect partner for a sunny day. Germany’s premier white wine, dry Riesling is known for its crisp apple and ripe peach flavours. The Paulinshof Riesling ‘Urstück’ Trocken (2015) has floral, almost perfumed notes.

Germany is the world’s third largest producer of Pinot Noir (or Spätburgunder as it is known in Germany) and makes some of the best examples around. German Pinot Noir is utterly charming and is known for its fruity and spicy aromas it plays a big part in the constantly evolving German wine scene. The Weingut Claus Schneider Pinot Noir (2014) has hints of raspberry, strawberry and blackcurrant – a refreshing red that’s great with food.

To accompany the chosen wine, each picnic hamper will comprise an assortment of German delicacies created by Executive Chef, Bjoern Wassmuth. Three varieties of Bavarian Giga rolls, including Black Forest ham with Obatzda, a Bavarian cheese delicacy, and cornichons, will be included.

Sweet items will include such as Nussecken, a buttery shortbread topped with apricot jam and hazelnuts and finished with chocolate-dipped corners, and Niederegger Luebecker Taler marzipan treats in pineapple, cherry, strawberry and nut flavours.
