Crate celebrates £500k crowdfund success with Silo collaboration

To celebrate the success of its £500k crowdfund campaign, Crate, the Hackney Wick-based brewery and pizzeria, will launch a collaboration beer with Douglas McMaster, founder and executive chef of the world’s first zero-waste restaurant, Silo.

Available at Crate Brewery, the The Douglas Fir Silo Sourdough Sour will mark the end of the successful campaign and the beginning of Crate and Silo’s new partnership launching later this year.

Jointly brewed by the Crate team and McMaster, the beer uses the starter liquid of Silo’s sourdough which will be dry hopped with the springtime buds of the Douglas fir tree to create an aromatic bright beer. The beer will be light at 4.2% and will be available in 750ml bottles.

Crate launched the crowdfunding to fund a major refurbishment of its Hackney Wick home, The White Building. The refurbishment includes the opening of Silo, a new experimental brewery, an affordable work space, an extended ground floor bar and a new event space.

Crate Co-founder, Tom Seaton, said, “We’re so thrilled to have had such a successful campaign and exceeding our initial target, the extra funds raised will go towards a canning line to develop our brewing process. We felt such a big new chapter deserved something special to kick if off - a collaborative beer was the perfect choice!”

McMaster added, “The fact that the beer is made using the liquid from sourdough is rather sentimental for me, since sourdough bread was the first product we ever made and served at Silo.”
