Ei Group drives sustainability efforts with new water-saving initiative

Ei Group, the UK’s largest pub company, is rolling out a new initiative that is expected to save 80 million litres of water per year in washrooms across its managed estate, as part of an ongoing drive to improve sustainability across the business.

A new partnership with washroom specialists phs will see technology fitted in pub washrooms across the Ei Managed Operations portfolio, significantly reducing the number of hygiene flushes required, resulting in a financial saving alongside a substantial water reduction.

The move comes as the Group continues to reduce its carbon footprint and follows the recent development that free-to-use charging points for electric vehicles have been installed at the company’s Pub Support Centre and at selected managed sites.

Other initiatives include a cooking oil recycling scheme with Booker which has, to date, seen 380,000 litres of oil returned to Booker for recycling, while 95% of waste across the managed pub estate is being recycled. Savings are also being achieved from upgraded LED lighting, heating controls and cellar pumps.

Paul Harbottle, Group Commercial Director at Ei Group, said, “It’s important to us that we undertake initiatives that reduce our environmental impact and ensure we’re running a more eco-friendly and sustainable operation. Reducing water usage in our pub washrooms is a fantastic step forward environmentally and it will achieve significant savings financially too.”

Liam Greenall, Strategic Business Development Manager at phs, added, “We are delighted to be embarking on a new partnership with Ei Group and we look forward to helping them use water more efficiently across their business to save energy and money, while also delivering on commitments to cut wastage.

“True partnership is about understanding your customer’s business, what they are trying to achieve and knowing how you can help them to achieve it. Our objective is always to make sure that we’re achieving true net benefit for our customers and adding value with everything that we do.”
