Sainsbury’s London superstore relaunches after multimillion-pound upgrade

Sainsbury’s has invited customers in Streatham Common to try out its newly upgraded supermarket this week following a four-month programme to refresh and refurbish the store.

The group has invested in its south London Superstore to create a fresh, new look and feel and to make shopping more convenient and enjoyable.

The upgrades to the store, which included installing brand new refrigeration equipment throughout, are also designed to make it much more energy efficient as part of Sainsbury’s wider sustainability plans and ambitions, known as its Plan for Better.

The retailer has made similar investments in 30 of its supermarkets over the past twelve months, and Streatham Common is one of another 40 it plans to complete this year.

The works started before Christmas last year and the store remained open for the duration of the project.

Other upgraded features that customers will find within the store include:
• Transformation of Sainsbury’s distinctive fresh produce offer, which has been redesigned to put it front and centre in the store for customers
• A new hot food counter offering tasty, affordable cooked food to go
• Reorganisation of the layout of some parts of the store to make better use of the space, enabling the range of products on sale to be increased
• New signage and fixtures across all departments to help refresh their look and feel

The enhanced offer will also include a brand new Costa Coffee machine from next week, giving customers the opportunity of a delicious coffee on the go. The upgrade works even extend beyond the shop floor – for example, improvements have been made to colleague-only areas to help foster a more interactive and inspiring workplace.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Property Director, commented, “We’re constantly investing in our store estate to ensure we provide the best offer we can to the communities we serve, and it’s great to be able to do this whilst also making improvements to reduce the amount of energy used instore.

“We hope our customers in Streatham Common will enjoy the finished result and we’d like to thank them for their support and patience while we made these upgrades to the store.”

Helen Thompson, Sainsbury’s Streatham Common Store Manager, added, “We’ve worked really hard in the last few months to revitalise our store and I’m very proud of the way my team has stepped up to support our customers during the transition.

'I’m delighted by the response we have had from our customers so far and I’m looking forward to hearing more feedback in the coming weeks.”
