Michelin Bib Gourmand chef opens pub & restaurant with rooms in East Midlands

Following a pioneering 27-year stint in London shaping modern Indian food as we know it today, celebrated chef Krishnapal Negi has embarked on an exciting new rural adventure in Rutland.

This spring, Krishnapal and business partners took ownership of The Marquess of Exeter. The thatched Grade II-listed building dates back to the early 17th century, and is set in the historic village of Lyddington.

Opening the doors, Krishnapal offers guests two dining options at his new venture: The Bar at The Marquess and Krishna's at The Marquess.

There is also The Meadow, a lovely grassy spot behind the building for al fresco drinks and dining, as well as Rooms, the simple but comfortable 'inn-style accommodation.

The Bar at The Marquess delivers pub classics, such as prawn cocktail, £7.50, juicy steak, gammon with pineapple, or burger with homemade chips from £13.95, followed by hearty puddings: Sticky toffee; Lemon tart and the like, from £6.95.

Krishna's at The Marquess serves up authentic Indian dishes. For snacks and starters: Wild mushroom cake served on chickpea masala with mint (from the herb garden) tamarind and sweet yogurt. £7, and Chicken ‘65’ marinated breast pieces in spices and tomato chilli sauce £8.

For main dishes: Butter chicken, the guaranteed crowd pleaser which is delicately spiced and simmered in tomato and cashew sauce £16, and Lamb masala melting pieces of lamb cooked slowly in savoury onions £16.

Sides, from £4, include pulau Basmati, truffle naan, Aloo jeera and Pindi chole.

Sunday Roast will be coming soon and is expected to include a clever twist from Krishnapal.
