Andrew Edmunds passes away

The team at Soho restaurant Andrew Edmunds has announced Andrew's passing at the age of 79 with a message on the website, which said, 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Edmunds'.

Established in 1985, Andrew Edmunds is considered one of the last bastions of 'old Soho'. This 18th century town house has, for more than thirty years, attracted many loyal customers.

A relaxed atmosphere, seasonal menu and famous but reasonably priced wine list have ensured its enduring popularity.

The restaurant is a favourite haunt of journalists and establishment figures, who were among the first to pay tribute to him.

The Observer’s restaurant critic Jay Rayner tweeted, 'So sorry to hear that the art dealer and restaurateur Andrew Edmunds has died. A true pillar of Soho. I’ve been recommending the lovely restaurant that carries his name to people for years.'

Robert Chote, the economist and former head of the Office of Budget Responsibility, said on the restaurant's Facebook page: 'Oh no, what awful news. Condolences to family, colleagues and friends.'

Alexandra Shulman, the former editor-in-chief of British Vogue, tweeted 'On an already sad day just learnt about the death of Andrew Edmunds. His restaurant was one of my treasured spots for so long.'

Others said on Facebook: 'Sorry for your loss, this was our go-to restaurant when we lived in London and the (printed) Hardens was our bible. Still a 5 (Exceptional) for Ambience, I see.'

'This is a tragic loss to both London and the institution of Lunch. You will be sorely missed. I only hope the restaurant persists in your name. I will be back to pay my respects as soon as I can.'

'What dreadful news. My father introduced me to the restaurant over 25 years ago, he also passed away this year but in February. Next time I come for lunch I shall raise a glass to both of them.'

'Very sorry to hear this. I hope the vision of letting wonderful bottles of wine sing against a back drop of perfectly cooked simple food can live on. My condolences family and friends.'

Editor Becky says, All of us at Caterlyst would like to extend our sincere condolences to Andrew's family and close friends.<,i>
