McDonald’s UK chief executive Alistair Macrow to depart from role

Alistair Macrow, chief executive of McDonald’s UK & Ireland, announced last Thursday via LinkedIn that he has stepped down.

Macrow, after 18 years at McDonald’s, calls decision to leave “thoughtfully considered” and says the company is ready for new leadership.

Macrow served in multiple senior roles at McDonald’s, notably as UK & Ireland chief marketing officer and global CMO, prior to his appointment as chief executive for the region.

During his time as a marketing executive, Macrow led campaigns that became strongly associated with McDonald’s in the UK, including the 2012 Olympics tie-in “We All Make the Games,” the seasonal “Reindeer Ready” Christmas campaign, and the inclusive “There’s a McDonald’s for Everyone” brand platform. He also oversaw product innovations such as the Wrap of the Day, the Breakfast Wrap, and more recently, the introduction of the Big Arch.

During his tenure as global CMO, Macrow emphasised his contribution to creating a talent programme for marketers and noted McDonald’s recognition as the world’s most effective advertiser. As chief executive, he cited the group’s post-pandemic recovery, reporting growth three times faster than its nearest competitor over the last five years, alongside strategic investments in new restaurants, refurbishments, and franchisee recruitment.

Macrow did not provide a specific departure date or clarify whether he will remain involved with McDonald’s in any advisory capacity. He said he is looking forward to “the next chapter with my family” and will be “cheering on the business from the sidelines.”

His departure comes as the UK fast-food sector faces pressures from rising costs, shifting consumer habits, and increased competition from both international chains and domestic rivals.

McDonald’s UK & Ireland runs thousands of restaurants through a combination of company-owned locations and franchised outlets.
