Co-op reveals focus on F&B for Father’s Day gifts

New research from Central England Co-op has offered an insight into the shopping habits of sons and daughters ahead of Father’s Day.

While revealing that shoppers are likely to leave their Father’s Day gift to the last minute, the specially collated data published by the retailer also highlights that they are also more likely to shower their mum’s with gifts on Mother’s Day rather than the old man on Father’s Day.

The research also shows that while the amount of money we spend on Father’s Day continues to go up every year, it still trails behind Mother’s Day. In fact just over 37% of people admitted that they would spend more on Mother’s Day than Father’s Day.

In terms of when shoppers pick up an item for their dad, the data from Father’s Day 2018 reveals the day before the annual celebration is the peak purchase time, although many still leave it until the day itself, with spikes in alcohol and confectionery sales at 12pm on the day.

The most popular item purchased of those surveyed was a Father’s Day card, with data showing that card sales peak at 10am on Father’s Day as customers pop in on the way to see their dad – whereas 5pm is peak card buying time during the week before when sons and daughters pick one up on the way home from work.

Figures from last year showed that the top items when it came to people picking up a last-minute gift on the day included Carling and Stella lager, Thorntons chocolates, spirits such as Famous Grouse Scotch Whisky and Pimms and Co-operative award-winning prosecco.

A continued area of growth recorded has been in the category of special gifting, with the likes of key rings and gift sets proving popular with children wanting to get something for their dad.

Martin Hill, Head of Product and Category, said, “As a business, we constantly monitor what our customers want and this is why we have some great deals on cards, chocolate and beers, wines and spirits in time for Father’s Day.

“Whether customers like to plan ahead or leave it to the last minute, we have something for everyone to help celebrate with their father this June.”

Those looking to pick up a last minute gift for their dads can find some great options at their local Central England Co-op Food Store, from a bottle of Famous Grouse Scotch Whisky, ales such as Brewdog Punk IPA and Sharps Doom Bar, to a box of chocolates with Aero Bliss Mixed Selection or Thorntons Classic Collection among the choices.
