Macdonald Hotels to invest £5m in Aviemore resort

Macdonald Hotels is to invest £5m in improvements to its resort in Aviemore over the next year. This comes after the firm secured a new £299m loan facility with Lloyds Banking Group.

In the last financial year, Aviemore achieved a pre-tax profit of £600,000, compared with a loss of £200,000 in the previous year. Macdonald Hotels said the improvement reflected growth in both the leisure and conference sectors.

At the end of last month the company announced sales and profit growth of 5% and 7% respectively this financial year to March 2014, driven primarily by a 4% growth in occupancy.

The group, which operates 45 hotels across the UK, has already invested £13m in its portfolio, including further bedroom refurbishments at the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel, Edinburgh, Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel, Stirling and the Macdonald Marine Hotel, North Berwick, and Macdonald Holyrood Hotel, Edinburgh.

MacDonald Hotels has made a £1m investment commitment over a 3 year period enabling the firm to offer free WiFi to all customers powered by The Cloud, a BSkyB company.
