Warrington Borough Council unveils £52m town regeneration plan

Warrington Borough Council has unveiled plans for its £52m plan to revitalize Warrington town centre by 2018.

Subject to public consultation, details plans for the scheme include the construction of a new shopping centre, restaurant and leisure space, a new market hall, a multiplex cinema and a new civic centre.

The 8.4 acre development site extends from Bridge Street and across the existing Time Square development and includes the site of the existing market in the heart of the town. The Grade II-listed façade of the former Boots building on Bridge Street will be preserved, and the market hall built on the site.

Construction firm Muse, the urban regeneration firm of Morgan Sindall, has been chosen by the council to deliver the scheme.

The site will be developed in phases over the next five years and create up to 400 construction jobs and 400 permanent jobs when the scheme is completed in 2018.

A new building will be constructed on the site of Time Square to serve as a two-year home for the market, while the existing market is demolished and a new permanent hall constructed.

The scheme is part of the council’s Warrington means businessgrowth plan. Subject to a public consultation and planning approval, construction will start on site in autumn 2014.
