Shake Shack UK reports first profit since 2013 debut

The UK arm of New York burger chain Shake Shack has recorded its first pre-tax profit since launching in the market in 2013.

For the year ending 31 December 2024, the company reported a pre-tax profit of nearly £1.1 million, a notable turnaround from the £764,000 loss posted the previous year.

Losses had peaked at £7.5 million in 2020 but have steadily narrowed in the years following the pandemic. Turnover grew from £48.3 million in 2023 to £51.5 million in 2024, while staff costs saw a slight increase, rising from £14.3 million to £14.5 million over the same period.

The directors of Diverse Dining, the operator of the Shake Shack UK brand, noted that the trading environment ““continues to improve with restaurant sales increasing towards pre-pandemic levels.”

The rise in demand has prompted the group to be “actively in pursuit” of new Shake Shack locations, with “at least three new restaurants” already planned for 2025.

In 2024, the brand expanded with two new openings at London St Pancras and Birmingham Grand Central stations.

The directors are also working to establish a “stronger digital presence within the marketplace,” having expanded the company’s delivery sales channels from one to three.

Diverse Dining currently operates 17 Shake Shack locations across the UK, with a strong presence in London and additional sites in Cardiff, Birmingham, Cambridge, and Oxford.

Shake Shack opened its first UK location in London’s Covent Garden in 2013, nine years after debuting its original kiosk in New York City. Today, the brand operates 430 restaurants across the United States and internationally.
