Clapham Common craft beer pub relaunches kitchen takeovers

This month, award-winning independent craft beer pub, The King & Co, Clapham Common, is to relaunch its renowned series of kitchen takeovers, with a brand new extended residency by Malt + Pepper.

Launching on Monday 11 June, and running daily until Sunday 2nd September, the three month popup will showcase an array of small plates and sharers that are all beer-inspired and beer-infused.

Specialists in cooking with craft brews, Malt + Pepper’s residency at the popular pub will highlight the versatility of beer as an ingredient rather than simply an accompaniment. Brand new dishes such as Chicken Wings with Lambic BBQ Sauce and Cauliflower Popcorn with Lager Hot Sauce will be offered alongside staples from the chef’s previous popups around London, like Stout Braised Pork Belly with Smoked Porter Apple Puree, and Dirty Fries topped with Stout Gravy, Beer Cheese Sauce and Stout Candied Bacon.

The ideal spot for watching the World Cup or soaking up the Summer sun on The King & Co’s outdoor deck, Malt + Pepper will serve up their unique beer-themed Roast Lunch every Sunday.

On Tuesday evenings visitors can take advantage of the pub’s Burger Night deal and tuck into Malt + Pepper’s signature burger (two Beef Patties, Beer Cheese Sauce, Smoked Monterey Jack Cheese, Stout Caramelised Onions), plus a Little Hopster Pale Ale or glass of house wine, and those looking for a sweet ending to their meal can enjoy an exclusive Spent Grain Brownie with Stout Whipped Cream.

On Tuesday 12 June from 7pm, The King & Co will also host a one-off Brewers Banquet to celebrate the fifth birthday of nearby micro brewery London Beer Lab.

The event will feature six limited edition beers that have been created in collaboration with top British craft breweries who have played a part in London Beer Lab’s journey, including Brick Brewery’s “Crikey!” dry hopped sour and Elusive Brewing’s “Deserted Isle” toasted coconut and lime zest Hopfenweisse, as well as rare beers by breweries Burnt Mill, Bullfinch and Roaring Four, plus The King & Co’s house pale ale.

Each craft beer will be expertly paired with a special dish prepared by Malt + Pepper, and all of the breweries involved will be on hand to talk guests through the story behind their birthday brew.

Since its launch in September 2014, The King & Co has earned a strong reputation as a local pub with a difference, and was voted “Most Loved Local Bar or Pub” in the Clapham neighbourhood in Time Out’s Love London Awards 2018. Trusted for its extensive and carefully-curated daily-changing craft beer tap list, the venue has become equally well-known for its highly successful kitchen residencies by prominent London streetfood traders and popup chefs, which allow pub-goers the opportunity to experience a regularly-rotating spread of remarkable food and has provided a valuable testing ground for many of the capital’s most exciting vendors.

Malt + Pepper founder and head chef, John Longland commented, 'We're buzzing to be bringing Malt + Pepper to The King & Co. We've been on a tour of the capital for the last seven months, so to be heading to one of my favourite pubs, for a significant period of time is really exciting. Obviously we're following in the footsteps of some of London's best traders, so no pressure!”
