Waitrose plans to launch a South West distribution centre in Bristol in early 2027, bringing over 550 new jobs to the area.
The 360,000 sq ft Avonmouth site will be managed by logistics giant DHL as part of Waitrose’s expansion in the South West.
As part of its expansion, the supermarket has implemented new technologies, including AI-powered customer demand forecasting, to increase product availability and minimise manual labour.
Waitrose aims to boost supply chain efficiency for 50 regional stores with new distribution centre.
Alison Maffin, Waitrose’s supply chain director, said: “As we grow, it’s essential that our supply chain grows with us.
“This new site strengthens our network, ensuring consistent service for our customers and creating over 550 jobs in a state-of-the-art facility. DHL shares our commitment to sustainable logistics, making them the perfect partner for this next phase of our expansion.”
The new distribution centre is designed with sustainability in mind, featuring 1,200 solar panels, energy-efficient systems, abundant natural light, and landscaped gardens, making it Waitrose’s most environmentally friendly site, according to the company.
The retailer estimates the new distribution centre will save 2,225 tonnes of CO2 each year, with delivery lorries refuelling at the world’s largest biomethane station.
