Restaurateur Tommy Banks has announced the launch of Jeopardy Hospitality, a new venture created in partnership with Matthew Lockwood, his brother James Banks, and entrepreneur Neil Armstrong.
The group’s first project under the Jeopardy Hospitality banner is the restoration and reopening of The General Tarleton, a beloved North Yorkshire venue, scheduled to welcome guests later this summer. Through this initiative, the team seeks to revitalise treasured establishments and foster a renewed sense of community and purpose across the UK.
Acknowledging the vital role pubs play in British culture, community, and history, Jeopardy Hospitality will focus on revitalising these cherished venues. Each opening will honour the unique history and character of the site and its surrounding area. By restoring the distinct charm of every building and infusing each venue with Tommy, Matt, James, and Neil’s shared passion for excellent food and welcoming hospitality, the team aims to create a lasting positive impact on local communities—generating jobs and boosting business in the areas they serve.
Located in the charming village of Knaresborough, just 10 minutes from Harrogate, The General Tarleton is housed in an 18th-century coaching inn. Once a beloved local institution, the pub will be thoughtfully restored by the team and reintroduced as an eight-bedroom venue featuring a private dining room, spacious bar, and beer garden.
Jeopardy Hospitality offers Tommy and his team a chance to pursue new ventures while preserving the beloved Tommy Banks Group brand completely intact. Meanwhile, long-term plans are underway to further develop The Black Swan Oldstead, Roots York, The Abbey Inn, Byland, and Made in Oldstead—brands that continue to form the core of Tommy’s identity and vision.
Jeopardy Hospitality presents an opportunity to grow alongside The Tommy Banks Group, with new openings creating career opportunities both for local communities where each pub is based and for TBG employees seeking to expand their experience in hospitality.
Tommy Banks said: “Jeopardy Hospitality is an exciting new step for us, bringing new life to places with real history, like The General Tarleton. We’re not just reopening pubs, but working to restore them with care and respect for what makes them unique. It’s about creating spaces where people can come together, enjoy good food, and connect with local heritage. While times are challenging, we believe that growth is important for staying resilient in the UK hospitality scene. With rising costs and changing regulations, expanding helps us make the most of our resources. Together with Matt, James, and Neil, we’re focused on creating something that’s grounded in community.”
