Deliveroo has launched drone delivery services in Dublin through a partnership with global drone operator Manna.
The drones, capable of flying at speeds up to 80km/h, are expected to significantly cut wait times by enabling deliveries in as little as three minutes.
Each drone is overseen by a dedicated dispatcher during its flight, with food lowered to the ground using a biodegradable tether. Customers can track their orders through the app as they normally would.
The pilot programme is based in Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, allowing customers within a 3km radius to order from popular local restaurants including Musashi, WowBurger, Boojum, and Elephant & Castle.
The initiative is part of Deliveroo’s broader strategy to explore how drone technology can improve service in suburban and harder-to-reach areas.
Over the next six months, Deliveroo plans to expand its branded drone service to include more restaurant partners, along with offerings from its growing grocery and retail division.
Deliveroo envisions expanding drone deliveries to additional regions, contingent on receiving regulatory approval.
Manna has already carried out over 170,000 delivery flights in Dublin 15.
Carlo Mocci, chief business officer at Deliveroo, said: “Our mission is to bring local neighbourhood favourites to as many people’s doors as possible, and constantly raise the bar on the experience and service we provide, so I’m thrilled to launch drone deliveries in Dublin today.
“We’re excited to explore how drones can help us reach new customers, complementing our existing rider model and if successful, the prospect of expanding drone deliveries across Ireland and into other markets.”
CEO and founder of Manna Air Delivery, Bobby Healy, added: “Air delivery is fast, clean and safe, offering a new avenue for local businesses to reach more consumers. Manna Air Delivery is proud to partner with Deliveroo, a platform trusted by top local restaurants and eateries, to bring this innovative delivery experience to customers.'
Deliveroo, founded in 2013 by William Shu and Greg Orlowski, currently operates in nine markets worldwide.
Last month, it was announced that US food delivery app DoorDash will acquire the British delivery giant for £2.9 billion.
