Greggs appoints former Tesco finance boss

Greggs has named Richard Smothers as an independent non-executive director, a role he will assume from 1 February 2026.

He will take on the position of chair of the audit committee from 6 March 2026 and become a member of the audit, nominations, and remuneration committees.

Smothers previously held several leadership roles at Tesco, including finance director from 2003 to 2006, and spent 14 years with the supermarket retailer.

Matt Davies, chair of Greggs, said: “We are delighted that Richard has accepted our invitation to join the board.

“He has extensive financial expertise in a listed company environment and great experience in retail, which will be of significant benefit to our business.”

Smothers most recently served as chief financial officer of Greene King until early 2025 and has prior experience as CFO at Mothercare.

Greggs announces that Kate Ferry, its current non-executive director and chair of the audit committee, will depart effective 6 March 2026.
