Langan’s Chef Founder Richard Shepherd passes away at 77

We are sad to report that Langan's Brasserie Chef Founder, Richard Shepherd has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 77. He was one of the world’s first chefs to receive three Michelin stars.

Langan's Brasserie opened in 1976 as a joint venture between actor Sir Michael Caine and the late Irish restaurateur, Peter Langan. They were joined by Richard, the former head chef of the Michelin-starred Capital Hotel in London. He was one of the first British chefs to be given a Michelin star.

Richard, who owned an interest in the business, created a menu that the restaurant still boasts today has 'changed very little' in almost 40 years. With its signature dish of spinach soufflé with anchovy sauce, the restaurant soon became a hit.

In 1998, Richard opened Langan's Coq d'Or on the Old Brompton Rd, London SW5, which has since closed.

Having become the sole owner of Langan's Restaurants, which included four other venues plus a collection of restaurants on eleven P&O cruise liners, Richard sold his shares in 2012, after nearly 36 years at the helm.

Langan Brasserie's team posted on Instagram: 'Before his departure from the business in 2012, Richard developed a straightforward, affordable form of haute cuisine that he describeb as 'basically English, respecting French tradition', a food ethos that we continue to honour in Langan’s today. Graziano, James, and the entire Langan’s Brasserie team wish to thank Richard for his legacy.'
